Horyuji Temple is known for having the world’s oldest wooden structures, and it became Japan’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Horyuji Temple’s wooden buildings, which have been in existence since the 7th century, undergo major maintenance and repairs every few hundred years.

The Horyuji Temple is actually the first site in Japan to be named a UNESCO World Heritage site, which should give you an indication of its importance. (as a general rule, the earlier a site is declared a heritage site, the bigger of a deal it is.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area includes a variety of buildings found in Hōryū-ji and Hokki-ji in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, Japan. These buildings were designated in 1993 along with the surrounding landscape, under several criteria.

Horyuji existed for about 1,300 years through the many earthquakes of Japan. Horyuji is made of Hinoki wood, and it increases its strength by 30% over 300 years, but it decreases after 500 to 1,000 years. The 1,300-year-old temple now has about the same strength as new Hinoki wood.

It is believed that Horyuji was built by Prince Shotoku Taishi (the “Prince of Holy Virtue”), who was a very honored regent, statesman and scholar, and also the author of the Seventeen-article Constitution, which contributed enormously to the political and cultural development of Japan.
