Dec 03, 2018 · Art Tatum plays the piano like Venus Williams plays tennis–consistent and hot, but seemingly effortless. The notes flow through his fingers faster than you can say “Match, Set, Game”. It’s beautiful to see Venus play, and beautiful to hear Art Tatum and Ben Webster swap serves on this record, originally issued on the Pablo label.

Apr 22, 2014 · The great pianist Art Tatum was pretty much a solo act his entire career-his rich, ornate style rarely meshing with another soloist’s contributions. Which makes the 1956 recordings he did with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster at the end of his life (Tatum died a mere month after these sessions) all the more precious.

“The final volume in this very worthy series is a comparatively relaxed affair, a quartet set with tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster. Webster lets Tatum fill the background with an infinite number of notes while emphasizing his warm tenor tone in the forefront on a variety of melodic ballads and standards.

Cannot find this on Spotify! Wow! Great pairing of two jazz greats i never knew worked together ,, love this album! Its a classic between the soul tenor of Ben Webster but spiced with the eloquence of Art Tatum’s magical piano that was not bigband not bop but rather a classical perfection with a bit of the blues.so jazz it was!

Ben Webster said “I just went into the studio and we played”. Two musical giants like these could play with complete relaxation, and that relaxation is evident throughout the session. You only have to hear Art Tatum’s introduction to All the Things You Are to feel confident that this album will be a masterpiece.

Recorded in 1956 the quartet comprises Ben Webster (tnr), Art Tatum (p), Red Callender (b) and Bill Douglass (d). I was suspicious when this album was initially recommended to me; Ben Webster, renowned for his ballads, and Art Tatum, renowned for his break-neck speed and overuse of notes! Totally incompatible? How wrong I was.
